New online book delivers access to experts

(TORONTO, Jan. 11, 2011) – Expert advice on everything from art history and acute care nursing to viral marketing and viticulture is now just a click away, thanks to a new online booklet produced by Ontario’s 24 public colleges.

The College Book of Experts –www.collegebookofexperts.org– provides users with the names of faculty experts from across Ontario. The site is searchable by college name, area of expertise, or by using an individual’s name.

“There’s a wide range of expertise available for commentary, insight and information,” said Linda Franklin, president and CEO of Colleges Ontario. “This will help ensure that journalists seeking explanations or commentary can quickly find the best person to help them.

“With just a couple of clicks, journalists can immediately determine who to speak with on a particular issue,” Franklin said. “Search away, and find the person you need - or a great story idea - within seconds.”

Ontario’s public college system has more than 200 campuses and satellite locations across the province, serving every size of community. There are about 7,000 full-time and 12,000 part-time faculty members at the colleges.

Ontario’s colleges offer courses in more than 600 program areas. The scope of subjects taught has expanded enormously since the college system was established more than 40 years ago. About 60 baccalaureate programs are now offered at Ontario colleges. In addition, another 65 degree programs are offered provincewide through college partnerships with universities.

As well, college programs evolve to meet the changing demands of the new economy. For example, 35 new programs related to the needs of the green industries have been started in recent years, including 14 programs that were introduced this fall.

“We knew there was a need for this site because there is so much going on at our colleges, and so many people to tell the many stories,” said Franklin. “The College Book of Experts will provide one-stop shopping.”
